I went on a day tour with Oscar out to the humid chaco and it was a highlight of my long birding career. It was part of the World Big Day and big days are my favourite form of birding, but Oscar and Sergio both took time and care to make sure I had seen and heard each new species. So our species total of 138 might have been a bit smaller than it would have been without me slowing things down, but we saw 10 species of woodpeckers (including my main goal, White Woodpecker) and many more, including stunning views of a Red-billed Scythebill. I had birded in similar habitats before in northern Argentina, so I “only” saw 24 new birds for my life list. All in all it was a very enjoyable day with two of the top birders in Paraguay and I would recommend their services to any birder visiting that beautiful country.
